Shipping has historically been a male-dominated industry and that tradition runs long and deep. It is something that should be addressed not only on International Women’s Day. However, it is the perfect day to have a look at the shipping industry’s future which would benefit not only for more female seafarers but also from more women in leading commercial roles.
Through its global programme on the Integration of Women in the Maritime Sector, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is making a concerted effort to help the industry move on from that tradition and to help women achieve a representation within it that is more in keeping with twenty-first century expectations.
This video was launched in 2013 but is still worth watching. It shows how the work of the IMO, and others, is beginning to promote change for the better for women in shipping, and highlights first-hand experiences from some of those who have already succeeded.
For this year’s International Women’s Day, the UK Chamber of Shipping has put together an interesting graphic.
